Hi everyone,

I'm going hiking in Scotland in a couple of weeks and one concern I have is the likelihood of midges/mosquitoes still being a problem. I've read that they can still hang around up to and including October, so does anyone here have any first hand experience of hiking in Scotland in October, and were there any/many of these pesky insects? Would you say it'll be worth bringing an insect repellent?

Yes, yes and yes.
I went up to the Highlands last Nov and there were swarms at sunset.
No mosquitoes (mossies), but quite possibly plenty o' midgies.

But depends on the area and weather, of course.

Ok, thanks...very useful to know! I'll stock up on insect repellent for sure, perhaps a good deet insect repellent. I would have thought the awful weather might put them off, but I guess they're more hardy than I imagined

Other might disagree, but for me nothing but 100% DEET (or 98% if that's all I can find) works well enough.
