Wolf Creek has such fond memories for folks (including me) only because it was there when nobody else had good powder....I headed up there one time from Taos, when my daughters were younger and that was our family sport of choice, for that reason (powder). At that elevation, you can count on snow and cold. Decent hill, but not worth a destination trip in my opinion. I don't resort ski anymore, but have to admit, I still would not pay over $100 per night for any lodging and I have skiied Aspen in fine style before. I just cannot imagine paying that much for the value of lodging no matter how fast money was burning a hole through my pocket. I assume there should be deals abound at VRBO guys. Way too many empty resort properties, unless of course you insist on being part of the holiday crowd, then what fun is the skiing I must ask?

10 years of climbing, and about 5 of bc skiing in northern CA and I never had any interaction (positive or negative) with the SC. Once, I traveled to a trailhead with someone who was joining a SC outing, but that was it. And they didn't "ban climbing". They have nowhere near that much power. Seems to me that you spend way to much time worrying about them instead of ignoring them and finding others to spend time with. Oh, well. Your loss.

It's not about riff-raff, it's just that resorts don't make any money off lift tickets. Their income is in real estate these days. So for a destination resort like Aspen very few people request single-day lift tickets. It's not that they're not available, it's just not a priority.

Ah, now I remember. You're the guy with the MLC SC problem. I remember because I didn't know what it was and asked.

One question - do they give as much of a crap about you as you do about them? What are you wasting your time for?

Does seem like a big overhead for only a day, but given the right conditions, I can understand it. What price a really great day in the mountains? We flatlanders have to pay it for living there.

For me, too short and too infrequent trips are dangerous. I was taking quick ski trips and coming back with a disproportionate number of injuries. I realized I was "task loading" myself, trying to squeeze a little more out of the day or three than was safe.

Last year, top Aspen price was $96. Expect about the same, but they haven't announced their prices yet. (It took a single yahoo search to find that.)

This is looking better and better. Thank you Martha. Looks like it's about 50 miles from Vail and 35 from Aspen so we could ski both. I've never skied Aspen and Vail only back in the '70s. Probably need a car, though I may investigate shuttles.

My usual ski bud from college just decided he wants to go after all. He isn't up for $1100 a night either. In fact this is gonna be a budget run. I'll post here what dates on what mountains and see if anybody wants to get together for a day of resort. Though, I may hang around a couple of extra days if any bc or ice climbing is workable. Looks like fly out 26JAN. Thanks for everybodys input.

We're thinking of basing this gig in Dillon. Is that a good idea? We found a Comfort Inn at $133/night. I think the idea is to hit 4 mountains in 4 days.

Back when I couldn't just drive home at night, that's where we always stayed. Vail, Copper Mountain, Arapahoe Basin, Breck, Keystone, Loveland are all a short drive from there. Winter Park isn't too far either, but I wouldn't bother if you're there for 4 days. (I love WP. I just wouldn't drive there when you're right by the other areas.)

Loveland is actually a shorter drive from Denver, but Winter Park not far. To get to WP from Dillon, you go through Eisenhower Tunnel and then head north over Berthoud Pass.

I remember having to chain up right after the tunnel. Pow Pow Pow Excellent.

One of the passes, I think it was Wolf Creek? There were wrecked cars all over the side of the cliff. The accumulation of years and years.

I stayed at the Super 8 in Carbondale during ski season three years ago. I'm not exactly sure how much the room cost, as I got it free with reward points. I did make a reservation...maybe like a month or month and a half in advance. Carbondale might cost more, but it is closer to Aspen, FWIW...
