$260 BUCKS FOR MEMBERS? YIKES!

CMC is offering WFA Basic classes for $85, and the Wilderness Medicine Outfitters WFA Basic for $95 and Wilderness Medicine Intermediate for $145, classes available in Golden. The latter also WFR recert. Same stuff, more affordable.

Thanks MP but it helps to compare apples to apples. Many advertise WFA but its only 12-16 hours. First Lead's price is reasonable considering it is a 24 hour class that not only teaches WFA but can recert WFR. Not all classes do that. First Lead also has a 3 yr expiration that is honored by other agencies. And materials are included.

Wilderness Medicine Outfitters charges WFR recert as:
"Cost as of 3-09 is $235 tuition (early registration within 2 years of cert date) plus $65 books and materials. Cost increases if over 2 years and not previously a WMO grad or grad from other POME member school."

So $235 plus $65 is???

NOLS is also holding a local three day class for $265.

As I mentioned above, WFA Intermediate will also recert and that's only $145 (okay, plus $39 materials fee). But it's also a 24-hour course.:

Minimums:
24 hours class (Testing afterwards)
Complete professional 2 people CPR, concurrently or no more than 6 months previously.
Pass WMO written recert exam scoring 80% or higher.

This can be done by taking:
1. Intermediate wilderness first aid
2. Advanced wilderness First aid
3. AWFA distance learninbg - Call for details and see distance learning here on web site
4. 24 hours of a WFR class

And the WMO course I provided a link on above matches what the First Lead course is providing. This is including CPR certification/recertification with the WFA or WFR Recert. The $95 or $145 WMO courses are without CPR. I did not clarify that in the OP rather leaving it up to the individual to look at what was provided by First Lead (who also gives the class for the CMC-Denver chapter). Cheers!

...and the American Red Cross offers a bunch of stuff, too, including ONLINE CPR text training. http://www.coloradoredcross.org/

Just adding to the mix. I know you want to promote the AAC but after Friday night with The Boy's Club I'm more than a little offended by the Old Men Attitudes.

Which are great classes for urban needs but not applicable in this case as they don't teach wilderness aspects. I have taken Red Cross classes and they have very skilled instructors. So sorry your Friday night was rough. Can we keep that out of this post? Lots of boys and girls were having a good time at the annual dinner on Sat so I can't say its a common issue.

Well, Chris, based on previous threads I've seen about the AAC I do think this is a common issue. I poo-poo'd it earlier but now understand better the concerns. To ignore them is anathema to the organization.

Glad to hear folks were having a good time at the dinner. Alcohol and age (boys and girls) are defining factors in that. I can pretend to have a good time just about anywhere with a couple of brews in my gullet. And so can the Old Men.

I still can't justify choosing the AAC program over another offering similar content and I'm certain I'm not alone. Until the club becomes competitive in all markets, programs, gender, opportunity, you're climbing up the wrong wall. And I certainly think the conversation I had with Arlene Blum today would support that.

Another factor that helps this WFA/WFR offering is the course is valid for 3 years when many are only 2. (CPR part is different) So only having to take a WFR refresher every 3 years beats having to do it every two when factoring in that you need to offer up 3 days for the class. Otherwise if the WFR expires the 76 hour class runs $550 or more to recert. Cheers!

Aw, H, you missed the message.
