Oh shit, that's terrible.

I never met him, but bought some stuff from him via the Gear Forum. Seemed like a good guy.

RIP, Chris.

Total Bummer!

We exchanged many a PM's regarding gear, techniques and partner relationships.

He will be missed by this dude.

My condolences to all that were blessed by his presence.

May his powerful spirit be SUPER blessed in his next life.

I met Chris on Mount Rainier in 2006, he was not a part of our team, but our two teams were camped right next to each other at Muir. We all had a great time hanging out in camp and sharing stories, and kept playing "leap frog" on our summit attempts the next day. It seemed every time one of our teams took a break, the other would catch up. At the top of the Disappointment Cleaver one of the members of our team started to suffer from back spasms. Chris and his teammates conferred and decided they would take our third on to their rope as a fourth and help her gain the summit as she had been on the peak before without success. Back at camp later that day, both our teams packed up camp and descended the mountain together, glad to have made new friends and already talking about future plans.

Chris and I climbed a couple of times in Colorado after that meeting, and kept in touch about future big mountain plans. Chris loved high altitude peaks and had successfully led climbs in Mexico, Ecuador and Bolivia in the years that followed. In 2008 he was getting ready to return to Mexico for a third climb of Orizaba with his friends Jon (whom I had also met on Rainier), Barry and Rush and invited me along and asked if I knew anyone else who would be interested. Kiefer jumped at the opportunity and we spent the late summer and early fall training for our climb. Our trip to Mexico was a huge success and a wonderfully planned combination of climbing and cultural experiences that only Chris could have put together. He actually studied anthropology in college and was always incorporating cultural travel with his climbing trips. His thoughtful planning of the climb from acclimatization to menu, rest days, and celebratory meals combined with the cultural aspects from touring markets to touring ancient Aztec pyramids made this a trip to remember, and I was looking forward to joining him on future "Haliku Adventures".

Unfortunately the economy thwarted our plans for Kilimanjaro, but one day I will still get to that peak, and when I do I will dedicate the climb to my friend Chris, and call his name from the summit. Rest in peace my friend, you will be missed...

I'm very sad to hear this news. I'd not met Chris in person but we've emailed each other a number of times and spoke on the phone about climbing together on various trips. It never worked out for one reason or another but I viewed him very highly. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends, and to his brother Tim (SP member Axe).

Climbed once with Chris/Team Nacho in their prep for Denali (Longs, April '09). I didn't know him as well as others on this site, but I enjoyed our limited time together. An avid climber and spirited outdoorsman, he will be missed. RIP Chris.

This is terrible news. All of us that were good friends with Chris and climbed with him will sure miss him. Almost seems unbelievable that he's gone. Cheers Chris.

So so sorry to hear about Haliku's passing. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

I think his father is a member here at SP. I remember he had posted a photo and in the caption he wrote something like "this is my son Chris, Haliku" Does anyone know Haliku's father's SP name?
