I've been mountaineering amongst other activities here in Colorado for over four years now, and have in the past year gotten into technical canyons with tremendous drops. I'm looking for some cool rappeling in the state, preferably something that doesn't require a wet suit and that is feasible in the non-summer seasons. I've read about some places, but want to hear what SummitPost has to say (many of them require a wetsuit).

Dinosaur National Monument has plenty of dry canyons (at certain times of the year-there is snow there right now):

So does the Delores River country.

Grand Junction area has plenty of canyons as well, but most aren't slot canyons if that is what you are looking for. There are a few slots in that area, but they are quite short.

Also, don't be fooled into thinking that canyoneering is just rappelling. Many canyons take climbing skills as well.

Well, just downclimbing in my experience so far. Thanks, I'll look for some steep-arse canyons at Dinosaur. Whether it is slot or not matters little to me; I'm mostly looking for multiple big drops.

Thanks for those route descriptions. Since I was "raised" in the 1st descent, non-invasive canyoneering school, you have nothing to worry about in terms of me installing hardware. I see what you mean about some climbing being required to summit Outlaw.

I don't know of any myself. Most of the lower Gunnison isn't the right kind of rock. I don't know about upper.
