Hey guys! So I know this may be off topic from the usual but my husband and I are looking at getting our first puppy. It's a little boy german shorthaired pointer, we are both very outdoorsy year round and we were hoping to name the puppy something about our love for the outdoors, colorado, skiing,beer, hiking, biking and what not. I was hoping for any input from fellow outdoor adventurers, thanks guys :)

Why not name him after a mountain or area you both love/like or that has special meaning to you?

I named Logan after Mount Logan in the Mount Evans Wilderness. Not my favorite mountain by any stretch, but a lovely place and a handsome name.

Not exactly an outdoorsy name, but Scout is pretty cool. I had a blind rock climbing partner whose seeing eye dog was named Jeep. Talus is cool too.

Just don't name him, 'Rock'. If you started calling for him in a climbing area, everyone within earshot will be ducking under their helmets. :D

Here's a name that's best for a dog you take to wild, open, unpopulated places - because you sure as heck aren't going to call out this dog's name if you're in an urban center, airport, government facility or other crowded place: Jihad.

Bierstadt.

If you want to be more subtle, Albert.

As far as, "what not," if you could just get such an active dog interested in chilling out and watching you paint, now that would be something!

I agree with Sarah, it's all about a place name that is meaningful to you that has a catchy ring to it. We named our first dog "Rainier"...after the mountain, not the beer.

my dog's name is Meriwether Lewis. We just call him Lewis though. Never got around to getting a Clark.

On a (slighly) more serious note than my previous suggestion, since you mentioned you love mountains, skiing, and beer, what about naming the pup "Couloir"? Your climbing and skiing friends will know what the word means. You can tell your beer drinking non climbing friends that it's a French word for a beer cooler. ;)

I had a golden retriever I named "Marmot." After the animal, not the clothing brand.

"I had a dog and his name was King;
I told the dog about everything ...

There in my truck the dog and I ..
Then one day the King up and died.

Then I thought about
The times we had,
Once when I kicked him
When he was bad;
Old King sure meant a lot to me,

But that hound dog is history ..."

This has to be one of the dumbest posts I've ever seen.

Added: I forgot to mention that I named my dogs after (2) of my favorite places to travel and explore. My Golden Retriever is named Montana (nicknamed Taner) and my Yellow Labrador is named Yukon (nicknamed (Yukie).
