there was a great post over in the Utah thread last year about a guy whose uncle died in the wasatch range; the OP never knew what happened, if his uncle made it to the top or what(they just found his body)
Ten years later he posted about it and one of the SP contributors had taken the summit register home - his uncle had made it to the top and signed the register.

it was so amazing, i will try to find the thread tonight.

Biographers, historians, researchers. That's what university libraries are often used for.

I read a lot of history. The primary sources are often documents like letters, personal journals, etc. Summit registers seem to fall into that category.
