Ten years later he posted about it and one of the SP contributors had taken the summit register home - his uncle had made it to the top and signed the register.

Biographers, historians, researchers. That's what university libraries are often used for.
I read a lot of history. The primary sources are often documents like letters, personal journals, etc. Summit registers seem to fall into that category.
