Is there any chance there'll be snow for water at the top? Temps are looking kinda warm but I think the got some snow recently. I'm doubtful but maybe.

I'm thinking about trying the Shorty's Well route again. I think I'm going to do it the "quick" way this time and hike all the way back on the road. The times I've tried, I've got on the east ridge as soon as possible. Neat hike but it adds a lot of up and down. Last time I camped too far and after a long snow slog I turned back where the ridge meets the crest of the Panamints.

We're hiking Telescope tomorrow - I'll let you know if there's any snow up there when I get back.

You can tank up at the spring at ~3700' in Hanaupah Canyon, just before crossing and going up the hill. You will hit an old mule trail before you get half-way (elevation) up to the saddle at 5300', and the trail makes the walking pretty easy.

The spring is near 36.18631, -117.01974 WGS84 DD, but it continues upstream and down-canyon a bit, too. Just don;t go far past it, as the brush is terrible.

You could bring an extra empty bottle to the spring, and just carry it to the top of the ridge, then maybe to 7000', so you can grab it on the way down.

There certainly could be snow by then, but would you really want that? My guess is that the last 1500' of talus before the trail would be grim with snow of any significant accumulation.

When my friends went by trail Oct 9, it was dry as a bone on the ridge.

Maybe you should just pay Wingding to leave a liter bottle by that dead tree at 9900', E (downhill) just past the climbout
(I'm really good at volunteering other people.)

EDIT: I've cached water at the base of the dead tree at
36.18321, -117.08356, on the downhill side. It's long gone though!

I'm hoping it won't be much if any. Just scraps to through a little extra in the bottle should I need to. More than likely I'll carry too much water anyway. I'm famous for that. Thanks for the coordinates too.

I'd like to try the route to Telescope from Shorty's Well sometime. I think I might be shuttling someone back to the Shorty's Well tomorrow evening, but I'll be hiking up the easy way from Mahogany Flats.

It's probably too late to let me know if you want one, but I'd be happy to drop a liter of water up on Telescope.

I was actually looking at Nov 7, because that's when my buds are back in town, and the moon is most favorable for a very early start. I was hoping to do Sentinel and Porter in a long loop from the east. It's Terra Incognita for me, and all I can find is one old DPS report. The elevation gain is rather bad -- the farthest I could park would probably be at 2000' elevation. Still a pipe dream. I was hoping to go up the ridges and find an old mule track for the return.

I'm sure you could do the Shorty's Well to Telescope hike, especially if you do the shuttle with a "support team". Really, it's all in pacing, and having favorable conditions -- a waning gibbous moon, so it's out when you start at 2-3AM, and a compromise between cool weather and short days. Otherwise it's just a long hill, easier than other hikes I've done with much less gain. And leaving the canyon in the right place is important! I have a story about that.

And I was just being obnoxious about the water!

There is no snow on Telescope Peak - not even one patch.

Interesting -- Charleston Peak had snow on the N sides of ridges yesterday, above 9200', but no more than a few inches deep. I would have thought Telescope gets about the same weather, but I guess not.

I could see the snowy Sierra from Charleston.

Yes, the Sierra looks snowy but it's bone dry in the Panamints.

It was really warm and dry on Saturday. It was warm enough in the morning at Dante's View (5500 feet) to start off wearing just shorts and tank top.

Here is my photo of wingding as she hikes in the Panamints on Saturday morning, taken from a canyoneering approach across the valley. The filename contains the date and time (20091024 101414):
