A buddy offered me use of his Coronado condo for a few days next week while he's out of town. Don't know much about the mountains in that area. Any recommendations for fun scrambles, hikes or the like?

Head northeast to the San Jacinto range; of course you'd better have snow shoes for the next week. Even Cuyamaca and Stonewall would require snow shoes. Hell, Agua Tibia has snow on it today!

Thanks Pete and Deb. That south arete on El Cajon looks interesting.

Hot Springs Peak is now open but you need to time your visit with the Los Coyotes Indian Band's "open" hours.

Can't say enough great things about Anza Borrego. Whale Peak is a wonderful hike and probably has some good snow on it now.

Something tells me I'll be making a visit this weekend.

Thanks for your input, Scott. Seems there's plenty for me to do.

Don't forget about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black%27s_Beach.

It's not a mountain, but it does have 300 feet of gain (on the way back up). It's great for spending a few hours in the evening, if nothing else.

It's not crowded, and as far as beaches go, it's quite scenic, and I don't just mean the nudity.

ooooohhhhh indianhead.

GREAT summit. walk up borrego palm canyon a mile and a 1/2 or so, then straight up the ridge 1500 ft. or so to the ROCK..... literally hanging in the air above the town of borrego springs.

gives me chills just thinking about it.

this is from last season but indianhead deserves some more mention.
