Sounds like a good idea, based on what I saw last time I was there (17 March). These photos will be a bit dated by 10 April, but they're the most recent I have.


Northwest side, from Panamint Valley near Lake Hill, 16 March 2010. I noticed my passenger-side window was still down upon returning from my summit hike of Lake Hill. Good thing I rolled up my driver-side window and locked the doors, though!



North side, from the summit of Wildrose Peak, 15 March 2010. Telescope Peak is peeking up from behind Rogers Peak. Mahogany Flat (8150 feet) is the white clearing near the left edge of the photo. On the north slopes, there was snow (in patches) down to 6000 feet. The road to the Charcoal Kilns (6900 feet) had just opened some hours before I drove up there. Previously, it had been closed where the pavement ends (~5800 feet). The south slopes (on Wildrose) had deep snow patches but also clear spots all the way up to near the summit (9050 feet). Unfortunately, my route to the summit did not include enough of those south-facing slopes.



And another photo from the east, 14 March 2010. A similar photo I took three days later showed identical snow cover, but the air was not as clear.



Weather forecast says a bit more snow is coming in a couple of days also.

I was out there the weekend of equinox. Didn't get up anything, just some easy day hiking.

It was insane in Furnace Creek. I've only seen it that crouded on holiday weekends.

I was not happy to see the dumbies coming down the 190 to Stovepipe, driving their van reallyyyy slow so grampa and grand son could ride together in "safety" in front of it. Beyond them was an entire group of people on bikes who'd been shuttled up to Towne Pass. These jerks even had a big flatbed trailer for all their stuff. Not cool. However, there were also many respectable cyclists out too. Which was neat.

I think I want an "adventure" type motorcycle.

Anyone know how far up the road towards Mahogany Flat you can currently drive (4wd with decent clearance)

Charcoal Kilns (6900 feet). There is snow and a locked gate beyond that. http://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/road-conditions.htm
