Great day to summit Iron Mountain

Hi all,

New participant here, found the site recently when looking up info about East Fork to Iron Mountain. Had a great day on the trail, started around 7 am and summited at 11:30. Only passed 2 hikers on the way up, and a few going down and I left one very ticked off rattlesnake about 4 miles up. Got back to the car by 2:30, a bit quicker than I expected, I was feeling pretty strong. All in all a great day, but it did get pretty hot on the way down. Sun was brutal coming down through the chaparral in the exposed areas. If you're heading up in the next few weeks, I recommend packing lots of water, I drank a lot more than I was expecting due to the heat. Definitely want some good cover on your head. Can't imagine what this trail must be like around mid-summer, brutal!

I've been hiking in Southern Cally for about 15 years but decided to get "serious" last December. Got some big treks coming up including the High Sierra Trail in August.

Anyway, great site and looking forward to learning more here!

Aaron

Going in the late afternoon/evening is definitely a smart idea!

Too bad it was so hazy yesterday, on a clear day, the views must be breathtaking from up there.
