Anaheim resident Scott Gossard, 44, was reported missing to Anaheim Police at around 1 a.m. by his mother, who said the experienced hiker last phoned her around 11 p.m. Friday and was expected home Saturday evening.

A hike account posted to the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club website describes Triplet Rocks as "the most remote and also the most difficult peak in the San Gabriel range," requiring hikers to negotiate gullies and climb rock faces.

He was found Monday afternoon. Rescuers first climbed to Gossard, then a rescue helicopter lifted him out and brought him to safety. He was uninjured, officials said, but it was not immediately known why he was unable to get down from the mountain on his own.

Rob, I know the east ridge didn't burn, but isn't that area still closed? The forestry service did a piss poor job of drawing the boundaries on their map.

For some reason Triplet Rock beckons me the way Devils Tower beckoned Dreyfus...

Yes it's closed. But I went there anyways. I ran out of patience, had to climb it.

The ridge did not burn; however there was some burning on the south side of Waterman. Felt bad about hiking through that.

Triplet Rocks is awesome. Cool place. No one goes there (which makes it more appealing) and it is defintely hard. You can't compare it to Big Iron, they're not on the same level. Much more work than San Antonio Ridge. Perhaps Iron north ridge is close to as grueling, but its probably like El Picacho del Diablo (like Erik Siering says) more than anything.

From another article:

Rescue worker set out on an intensive search and found Gossard in the area between Twin Peaks and Triplet Rocks Monday afternoon. He was airlifted out of a rocky portion of the mountains.

Gossard told rescuers he had lost his map and become disoriented. He was running out of water and was forced to feed on snow before he was found. Luckily, Goassard was uninjured and did not need to be hospitalized.

Must have been pretty cold during the nights he was up there, it even snowed on Satuday night. But that helped him not dehydrate, because he ate snow.
