What's New in CALIFORNIA

This thread is a location for SP'ers to post new Mountains & Rocks, Routes, Areas & Ranges, Trip Reports, or Canyons located in scenic California.

Feel free to post your own or someone else's new items that fall in these categories. Sometimes, not always, it might not be thought of as good form to advertise your submissions. That is not the case here. Please try to stay on topic!

I got the idea for this thread from the What's New in Europe thread, and the current discussion around making new things more visible, especially if they are good. My hope is this works a little different than the Europe thread though (for example, posts will not be deleted). Post them even if they are not great pages, my hope is that by having the new item referred to in a forum post, rather than the content portion of the site, people might be more willing to offer constructive criticism (or praise), suggestions for additions, and help make the pages better (I am reluctant to do this elsewhere as I do not want it to be poorly received). If your page is not perfect, expect others to offer help and suggestions. If you receive it, use this to make your pages better.

I will kick it off, with some great recent new items in my view:

From Marcsoltan:
Two rock climbs in the Alabama Hills
Nut Towers: http://www.summitpost.org/nut-towers/675275
Earthday Dome: http://www.summitpost.org/earthday-dome/674129
and the route from North Lake to Piute Pass: http://www.summitpost.org/north-lake-to ... ail/676690

From Vitaliy M:
Pop Bottle, at Lovers Leap: http://www.summitpost.org/pop-bottle-5-7/677288

From Noondeuler:
Blanco Mountain, in the White Mountains: http://www.summitpost.org/blanco-mountain/673911

From Day Hiker:
The route from Towne Pass to Pinto Peak: http://www.summitpost.org/from-towne-pass/676370
This last page doesn't have a lot of fancy photos, but it has distance, elevation gain, hiking time, a good description, a photo of the route, and a map. Everything you need for a visit is there.

Here's another nice page by Marcsoltan, this one's a climb down in Joshua Tree, in the Wonderland of Rocks.

Hey, thanks for the plug. It's worth noting that I actually took 142 photos during that hike, including many of the route itself. I just refrained from posting anything other than what I felt would be needed for following the route. The site has enough clutter, and I don't care about photo points.

So I only posted one photo out of the 142, along with the one topo-map image I created. I think not enough peak and route pages have a map. For those that don't know about it, that new gpx/map feature by Montana Matt is a great idea for showing a map of a route as well.

I think this thread is the right location to pose this question: There is already a beautiful and in my opinion very good canyon page about Convict Canyon (http://www.summitpost.org/convict-canyon/174776). There is a little paragraph about the trail going up the canyon. Do you think it is worthwhile and appropriate to post a separate dedicated route page for the Convict Canyon trail? I have been in that area many times and recently hiked all the way to Mildred Lake. I took many photos along the hike and have a gpx file and maps, etc. Just want to get an input of what you guys think.

Beautiful area. I hiked up that way en route to Red Slate Mountain's north couloir last month. There is a use trail from Mildred Lake to Lake Wit-So-Nah-Pah which I descended on the way out, but the way in I took the trail up to Dorothy Lake and Bighorn Lake, then cross-country to Wit-So-Nah-Pah. Stunning scenery.

I tend to save the scenic trail shots for my personal photo albums rather than cluttering up SP with them. I'm also not sure what purpose is served by providing GPS coordinates for a maintained trail. Just my opinion.

Yet another nice page by Marcsoltan, also in Joshua Tree and with his requisite recommendation for Royal Siam Thai Food just outside the park's northwest entrance.

It's not about providing coordinates so others can follow a simple trail.

The gpx file feature lets people view the route on a map, so they can view their proposed route the same way people might want to view any trail on any map before embarking on that particular hike. I think many people want to view their route on a map before actually going there.

The gpx file feature also lets people view an elevation profile and some basic stats, if they're interested in knowing those things. I think many people want to know mileage and elevation gain (at least ball-park values) before deciding on a hike.

Marc is at it again with two new pages for rock routes in San Ysidro Canyon:

http://www.summitpost.org/applied-magnetics-5-9/679979

dhoffman has also put up his first page, a route to Stegasaurus Fin in Domeland Wilderness:

I like to see a map for this last page, think it would make the route more clear, and also the driving directions on the page, rather than a link to another site. But there is labeled photo which points out some features.

Yeah, it's unfortunate that the Stegosaurus Fin route does not have more images or a gps route. As it stands right now, it does not add a lot more to the description that is already given in the parent mountain page. As I said, unfortunate, because it's such a nice area and mountain.

I posted a page for Cory Peak in the Scott Mountains.

Also, I posted a page on the Grey Rocks recently. The name is not exciting but it is one of the coolest, most interesting peaks in the Northstate.
