The average Colorado peak is 5500' taller than the average California mound so it's natural that CO has mountains covered in roads

15 minutes for me!

I've lived as close as a 3 minute walk to the Pacific (Naples Island, Long Beach) to where I live now at about 40 minutes to the beach. I actually prefer being closer to the hills and away from the beach. From my current house I can be at 8,000+ feet in about 40 minues and our weekend home is @ 5200ft and we can get to it in 35 minutes.

My parents owned a house looking out over Lake Tahoe, that was a 3 hour drive (without any Sac traffic), the ocean is 40 minutes. For NorCal you wouldn't want to be any closer to the ocean- consistantly cooler and foggy. But I wish I was closer than 3 - 5 hours away from the mountains.

Isn't Sonoma surrounded by mountains? I know your talking about the Sierra. But there is plenty of fun (for me anyways) mountains closer then 3-5 hours.
