The Whitney MR has pretty good snow coverage from Lower Boy Scout Lake up to Iceberg Lake. Below LBSL, there’s not enough snow to cover the dense willow branches, so it takes a while to get through that section if you have a large backpack. Also, the upper portion of the chute leading to the Notch (at around 14000 feet) is mostly loose rock with a few patches of snow.

Due to the lack of snow, some experienced Whitney climbers are taking the Main Trail, instead of the MR. There are several good trip reports on the Whitney Portal Store message board.

Hey. We saw your group coming down from Whitney as my friend and I went up to Iceberg lake. We did Mithral Dihedral on Mt. Russell yesterday. Weather could not have been any better over the days we were there (hike in to iceberg on Saturday and climb/descent/drive to the bay area on Sunday)!

Hi Vitaliy, I remember exchanging some emails with you in 2010, about Shasta and Whitney. On Sunday, I think you talked to Phil, who took the photos that I posted. I saw you and your partner from a distance in the afternoon, as I hiked back to our high camp at around 12200 feet.
