25 miles to the nearest pavement. If your car breaks down, you can probably find a local at the bar who will haul you out for free:

Need a place to stay (maybe because your car broke down?) - no problem. Motel, bar, restaurant - same owner.

A must stop on the way down Highway 50 from the Desolation Wilderness is Poor Reds in El Dorado, just past Placerville.
