According the the summitpost page for it, Shasta is often in season in October. How does it look right now? What routes would be reasonable to do?

Yeah dude. You have to be some sort of maniac to attempt that right now. Unless you really like rocks in your teeth. Or in your eyes. Or breaking your limbs.

Just kidding Minor. :)

Im looking at doing a winter ascent. I want to do Casaval Ridge. My wife wants to do Avalanche Gulch. SP says that Casaval is great for winter. Is Avalanche any good for the winter?

Avalanche gulch is really only good for the first few storms of the season. From what I understand after several storms it starts to experience what makes its name avalanche gulch.
Head for Casaval after a good cold spell and a decent amount of snow, thats my plan anyway!

Just tell your wife her route is no good and you have to do yours. Problem solved no?

The gulch is a very poor winter route. Prone to avalanches from three sides.

All the reports right now indicate we are fixing to get a deluge of Biblical proportions the next four or five days. Snow level is above 4,500, though I reckon we may get some lower than that.

Bubba's comments above appear to be consistent with the forecast of the National Weather Service. It just might snow indeed.

It was windy today, but it made for some fun clouds:
