CALIFORNIA WOLF ON THE MOVE

Looks like he's back! Impressive animal, I like his penchant for pushing the limits:

PORTLAND, ORE.

The Oregon-born wolf looking for a mate in the wilds of Northern California has moved to lower ground as winter approaches.

California Department of Fish and Game program manager Karen Kovacs told The Oregonian winter storms lashing the high country south of Lassen Peak have forced deer to lower elevations, and the wolf known as OR-7 has followed.

His satellite-tracking collar has shown him in oakchaparral woodlands east of Red Bluff in Northern California. Kovacs said this is his first foray into that kind of habitat.

The wolf gained celebrity after leaving its home ground in northeastern Oregon more than a year ago and journeying hundreds of miles across eastern Oregon, down the Cascade Range to Northern California in search of a mate. Shortly after he left, the state put a death sentence on two members of his pack for killing cattle, but that has been held up by a lawsuit brought by conservation groups.

He has managed to stay out of trouble and nearly out of sight. People have spotted him or his tracks a few times. Kovacs estimated OR-7 weighs 100 to 110 pounds, with paws measuring 5-by-5 inches. “He is feeding well, he is able to travel well,” said Kovacs. He has the distinction of being the only known wolf in California in nearly a century. When OR-7 crossed into California a year ago, Oregon had counted 29 wolves within state boundaries. That number has grown to 54 with a count of 25 pups.

While in California, OR-7 switched from his normal prey of elk to deer, which are more available. He has not crossed major highways and has turned back several times when he came close to Interstate 5. He swam across the Klamath River several times, Kovacs said. At 3½ years, the wolf is past the midpoint of a lifetime that normally spans five to seven years in the wild.

It seems likey that the wolf has recently roamed portions of this wilderness area represented on SP.
Funny, I was just thinking of the lone wolf and that area the other day while considering a visit later this month to the Thousand Lakes Wilderness (to the north), or alternately Lassen's SW entrance and nice lower spots the wolf has been roaming if upper forest roads are blocked by snow.

He seems to have taken a liking to the general area around the junction of the Southern Cascades and the Northern Sierra. There hasn't been much movement since this thread. The wolf's been hanging around south and southwest of Lassen NP since summer, but the details about terrain and food sources from the article above are interesting. It sounds like the Tehama State Game Refuge, Ishi Wilderness, Coon Hollow Wildlife Area, and Lassen National Forest are his current hangouts. That's not far from where he crossed my tracks in the snow near Magee Peak when I started following his updates nearly a year ago.

With day after day of rain and wind over, his latest updates have him seeming to roam back up in elevation to Plumas county south of Lassen in the remote area southwest of Lake Almanor. Will he next venture back west toward Red Bluff or Chico, south across the North Fork of the Feather River in Plumas National Forest, back north toward Lassen and Shasta, or back northeast to Modoc and Oregon like last year? Maybe he won't venture far at all by his lofty standards. Well, with this update, I'm sure he'll cross my mind when I'm out hiking, whether our paths cross or not.

As noted in the CA DFG pages linked above, a couple wolves from the Oregon pack were killed after depredation events and a couple more that were slated to be killed are under temporary protection from a court ordered stay.

The wolves of Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies are making headlines as several with tracking collars have recently been legally hunted while roaming outside national park boundaries. One was a well known alpha female. Montana's first wolf trapping season since federal protection was lifted last year is slated to begin this weekend with controversy freshly brewing.

This is seriously not self promotion, but if anyone is interested in the area the wolf has been hanging out in, this page might be informative.

 I already promoted you and Ishi above, but you were more concise.

I read that and did not even notice that it was a link. Obviously I am a dope.

^^^Nah, that sort of thing happens in the forums. I'm sure a few readers skimmed over some things. Besides an echo about an underappreciated area doesn't hurt.

Well, OR-7 is still roaming the general area around the Ishi Wilderness between Red Bluff, Lake Almanor, and Lassen NP, but has continued to pop up in news articles as the anniversary of his first crossing into California passed a few days before New Year's Eve.

Back in the Fall, he was referenced in relation to the presidential debates:

Of course, he's not the first wandering wolf to attract political attention:

This wolf does get around! A snippet from an article in today's paper:

California’s wolf is known as OR-7 because he was the seventh in Oregon to be fitted with a GPS tracking collar. While most wolves stay within 100 miles of where they were born, OR-7 proved different: he trotted 1,000 miles from northeast Oregon to California, then more than 2,000 since arriving.

I'd love to see them fly in a mate for OR-7. Now that a wolf has migrated to CA naturally, doesn't that open the door for a wolf management program?

OR-7 + OR-8 = CA-1 + CA-2

I suspect within our lifetimes there will be a CA-1 + CA-2= CA-3, CA-4,..., but I don't think artificial creation of that situation will happen (at least not anytime soon). Continuing management and monitoring does seem more than likely once wolves are here.

Like last March, OR-7 has recently ventured back into Oregon. Now that he has left the area and some time has passed, DFG has made a map available for viewing (for the first time in about 9 months)--
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/nongame/wolf/

As noted upthread, he spent some time in the Ishi Wilderness, southwest of Lassen NP, but I'm mildly surprised that he also ventured into the outskirts of Red Bluff, Anderson, and Redding. Just as I did, he spent time this January near the Redding Airport. Most of his time in CA has been spent along and around the halfway stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail, west/southwest of Lake Almanor. Butt Mountain is the best SP representation of his main roaming area--

Let's hope they will fly down a mate, female wolf, for this guy before he starts mating with coyotes. If that happens, the pups will be Red Wolves. I have heard from a number of people familiar with red wolves, they are supposed to be very aggressive and nasty. These people warned me to stay away from them.

From the above comments, it sounds like OR7 has gone back to Oregon. Let's hope he didn't mate with a coyote during his visit.

I think interspecies copulation is illegal in California. If nothing else this OR7 wolf is probably risking a serious fine if he has opened his playing field.

Didn't a couple wolf/coyote hybrids supposedly kill that folk singer up in Canada not too long ago?

Didn't know, but wouldn't be surprised.
