the first time i climbed at LVC was 1986... or maybe 87... maybe 85? sometime in the 80s is all i know. some of what the chief posts is spot on. but, i don't always agree with what SMG have to say. i believe SMG has an agenda, and that is to have a bunch of people go through LVC with their guides and experience ice at its best. hack it out early season and it wont be so good...

which does help the common folk. good ice is nice...

Coldstream is in as of yesterday. We were able to drive to the tracks but that will probably be the last of that this season. Snowshoes/skis a must for the approach.

Anyone climbing ice on the east side yet? Just wondering if Lee Vining has any ice yet... I'll be in Mammoth over the holidays and I'm not a skiier...

Lee Vining has good ice on the Chouinard Falls on the center lines. It was thick enough to place any length of ice screws you want. Beside that, it was either awful thin or not there at all. The approach was pretty ugly before this last storm. I don't know how it is now. By the holidays, it should be worth the hike out there.

Curious to get any more beta on how things are shaping up. Hoping to climb sometime between Christmas and New Year's in either LV or Tahoe.

A local says LV is in, but maybe just for WI4 & 5 climbers. :/
