Anybody been up there recently? How's the snow melting off? I haven't been up on either of these two peaks in a while and was thinking about hitting them sometime in the next few days. It looks like my work schedule is going to allow for a weekday free :D :D :D .

Thanks... I hadn't stalked that site in a long time. It was current on Baldy information but not Gorgonio but I'm guessing conditions will be pretty similar.

While I was on that site I saw it was announced that Kurt Wedberg's giving a Seven Summits slideshow at Adventure 16 stores this coming week. Double bonus! Copied from the Whitney Portal Store Message Board:

Is the Devils Backbone trail dry? I am going to be in Upland next week and I would love to hike back up to the summit of Baldy. I grew up there and Baldy was my first big peak ever in 1974 as an 8 year old. I have not been there since the late eighties and I hope it is still dry next week.

unless there is snow between now and when you go, you will be fine. it's been sunny and warm.

Went up Baldy through the 'bowl' this morning (Nov 17) and it was drier than twice-burnt toast; no snow anywhere. There's a slight chance of some rain/snow coming in Thursday/Friday this week, but otherwise its a trail hike to the top right now.

Dry now, will be absolutely parched after the next few days of warm desert winds.

i was up baldy (up register ridge down the backbone if it matters) today. it was 20 degrees with estimated 50mph wind. there is enough snow/ice in certain places to make conditions dicey enough to use microspikes. there is not, however, enough snow to do much else; i certainly wouldn't try the bowl, it was mostly frozen tundra with trace snow accumulation, especially at the lower elevations. the only parts i really sweated were certain parts of the backbone trail, i didn't even use them going up the ridge.

Hello there...

I'm glad to see someone got up there today...after that drizzle that came through here....I did receive a snow report from sports chalet of the snow in mammoth and Tahoe...My last time up Baldy was a solo in early december. I used cramptons and a big red sweater....into the valley of the Frost Giants I thought....It was really nice on the summit.....

Hard snow cover above cc. 8,000' on San Jacinto from Devil's Slide Saddle. Fairly cold conditions on the mountain yestarday, light snow flurries. Snow not deep, but fairly hard.

Used crampons on Tahquitz Peak North Face traverse the other day. Today, fairly cold in town, 40 degrees high (that's very low for this year).

Tahquitz Rock is pretty clean, saw party on the south (sunny) side rock climbing this morning.

North Gully of Tahquitz Peak has 2-3 inches of hard snow over very thin ice. The North Draw of Tahquitz Peak seems to have hard snow in the upper part, might make a great 40 degree ice climb.

But there is another storm coming tonight into tomorrow, hoping for snow...

^Did the storm on Sunday night drop much new snow? It looks like more is due this Thursday.

i can't speak for san jacinto area, but since this thread is specifically about baldy and san g, i can say that the san g area still looks pretty bleak for this time of year.
