Congress is considering renaming a Yosemite peak for Jessie Benton Fremont, wife of John C. Fremont and once 'the most famous woman in Los Angeles.' But the National Park Service is opposed.

I've always thought that having two "Mammoth" peaks so close to each other was pretty weird (like the two Morgan peaks further south). IMO I wouldn't object to renaming Mammoth Peak, but there are so many other un-named peaks in that part of Yosemite that are surely 'name-worthy' (and she certainly deserves a peak if anyone does). This peak which is the next peak south of Mammoth Peak certainly deserves an official name:

I was totally opposed to this until I read the article. It seems that Jesse Benton Fremont worked to preserve the land that became the park in the first place, not to mention that women leaders from that time period (or even this time period) don't get much recognition. How many geographic points are named after women in the U.S? I can't think of any off hand.

^^^General John C. Fremont described Mt. Shasta as unclimbable when he viewed it in 1846. Within a decade, as Fremont became a U.S. senator and the first Republican presidential candidate, Olive Paddock Eddy began making her name well known as one of Shasta's early and most frequent climbers. The mountain named for her holds perhaps the finest vista of Mt. Shasta and grandest views in the North State.

Banner Peak: This name was given the early name of "Mammoth Mountain" by the Whitney Survey....

There are three lakes named Helen in Yosemite alone, probably dozens across the state. One morning I drove from Rush Creek to Rush Creek.

If Congress votes to rename this peak Fremont, then there will be two peaks named Fremont in California. There's one named after John Fremont just south of the town of San Juan Bautista (which is south of San Jose). Its only about 3,000 ft high, and a really whimpy 3/4 mile hike up a well-maintained trail, but has a great view from its summit.

Around here at least, far more lakes are named for women then men. In fact, it seems to be that way in most areas I have climbed in the US.

Don't forget all the Mollies Nipples, etc. all over the place. Ferns Nipple too. It's a beautiful peak:

Piestewa Peak in Phoenix is named for Pfc. Lori Piestewa, a Hopi woman killed in Iraq in 2003. She was the first American woman military death of the Iraq War.

I did not know that Mount Eddy in CA was named for a woman. Things like this are interesting.

Maybe not a specific woman but "Naked Lady Meadow" qualifies.

As the book says, "Naked Lady Meadow is a sizable meadow with a spring-fed marshy area supporting a grove of large aspen trees. On the trunk of one of the aspens a sheepherder had carved the image of a "naked lady."

There are old aspen groves all over the Sierras with carvings of females on them. By Basque sheepherders -- lonely guys.

After reading the LA Times article I too think it appropriate. Always thought having Mammoth Peak so close to Mammoth Mtn only a few miles south was confusing. There certainly are other no name peaks in the current park they might have chose and apparently chose that one because it is prominent from a major highway.

I propose retaining both names, and calling it Fremoth Peak.
