I was in Ajo (is that just the greatest name for a town, or what?) last year and stopped at the local market for supplies. Kind of like a mini-Walmart, they sell everything from food to hardware. They had a special on motor oil, $1/qt. - such a deal, so I bought a case and tossed it in the back of the van. When I got home I thought the labeling was a bit funny, showing just "30" where I thought it should be something like "10W30". I read the small print on the back and it said, "Formulated for older cars. Not to be used in cars manufactured after 1964."
Where did they even find this stuff? Across the border?

It is probably "non-detergent" oil ("detergent oil" is really just oil modified not to coagulate). In older cars, you are supposed to clean the coagulated oil out of the oil pan. In more modern cars, the chemically-modified "detergent" oil keeps the crud from ever forming large chunks. When they used "non-detergent" oil in a cars, they cleaned out the oil pan and filters fairly often.

My brother still buys non-detergent oil for his tractor (built in the 1940s). I recall about 1972, his wife accidentally added detergent oil to one of his older vans, and he had to drain out all the oil and replace it. I now doubt that was really necessary, since real detergent oil had not been made for some time. Non-detergent is still a popular oil for industrial machinery.

A New Mexican and an Arizonan are drinking at the finest upscale establishment in Albuquerque when they both need to use the facilities, so they walk around back where the management has kindly dug a trench for such needs. After they're done, the New Mexican starts to wash his hands off using the hose, while the Arizonan just walsk back to the bar. The NMican says "we were always taught to wash our hands after peeing". The AZn replies "we were always taught not to pee on our hands".

What on earth were you doing in Ajo? As far as I know it's not on the way to anywhere, except maybe Puerto Penasco.

You don't have to look very far. It was somebody from California..

I told you, it's on the shores of Mono Lake in California.

Sorry, man..

Is this what you're talking about?

"As the film begins, the Stranger rides into the fictional mining town of Lago, in a setting similar to the Arizona territory. Three gun-toting men follow him into the saloon and then the barbershop, taunting and ridiculing him, but when one of them swivels him around in the barber's chair, he shoots all three of them dead."

Have to excuse me for my slowness. I had to put 2 and 2 together, and finally got FIVE.

It's on the road into Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, but I suspect you already know that if you know about Puerto Penasco. There is decent scenery and some peaks and good hiking in Organ Pipe.

I have even been there in the summer 3 or 4 times. They have some excellent monsoon storms in late summer, which is part of what allows all those cactus species to grow. But now that I have lived in a hot place for 10 years, I save any Organ Pipe trips for non-summer months.

I saw my one-and-only in-the-wild gila monster in Organ Pipe, in May 2001 I think.

Mount Ajo is on the DPS list.

Hey Day Hiker, that rock formation looks a lot like one in Kodachrome Basin. I see the picture is hosted at members.cox.net-- oh the irony. Maybe I should change my screen resolution... but that picture is currently burying a lot of text on my monitor.

I always thought the company name "Cox" is rather silly. Interesting that you can say "Cox" on the radio, but you can't say "cocks."

The image is of a rock feature on the Primitive Loop hike in Arches National Park.

I will have to fix that. If it's doing that to you, it's doing it to others. Before I sized the image, I even checked the width of the margin to make sure it would fit. I did not realize the margin width would vary between users.

Actually, it's part of a rock fin and rather non-phallic in appearance from virtually any direction. But leave it up to Day Hiker to find the one exact point in 3-D space from which it looks like a giant pecker! :D
