Tucson, AZ - places to camp ?

Were coming to see Okkevil River in June and jr. wants to camp. Are there any low cost/free campgrounds, or public lands where we could camp that are not too far from Tucson ? I don't want to drive in the dark for 2 hours after a show trying to find a campsite tho. Any suggestions ?

thanks.

I've been residing in the state of Arizona for 20 years. I know. I'm a poor SOB.

If you find yourself on the west side, there's a great desert campground (owned by Pima County) called Gilbert Ray.
Gilbert Ray has 130 camping sites which are first come, first serve. Think we doled out $15.00 the last time we stayed the night.

Catalina State Park is also a great one, if you're coming from that direction. Don't forget to check out the "Romero Pools" and "Romero Pass."

By the way, I could be wrong, but I thought the "Okkevil River" was a rock 'n roll band out of Austin, Texas ?? ?

It will be very toasty in June... junior may want one of those bargain-rate hotels off I-10 instead.

The high-elevation CGs up on Mt Lemmon are very nice but take awhile to get up there. May not be practical if time is an issue, and they fill quickly on weekends.

The decision is obviously yours, but in June I'd try Catalina State Park, just so I could hike to the pools and take a shower upon my return.
