Las Vegas Climb/Hike

Hi

Will be in Vegas for a few days in early March and was hoping to find a nice easy / moderate climb within an hour or so of the city. I am a moderate hiker/climber and would like something challenging but not to crazy. Prefer something that can be done in half a day. I was looking at red rock and thought that would be nice. Any thoughts / suggestions/ comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rich

PS - Any information on weather that time of the year would be great.

Usually that is good time for Red Rock. Are you comfortable with Class 3 rock? Class 4? Most of the scrambly trips have no official routes, and require at least some route-finding skills.

Turtlehead is a pleasant class 1/2 peak that would make for a 2 or 3 hour roundtrip easy start to your visit. A step up in class might be the nearby Turtlehead Jr (Red Cap). If you didn't want to pay the park access fee or do the 13 mile one way drive, you could take the Calico Basin Rd and eventually depart the trailhead for either or both Kraft and New Mts. You can find route descriptions on summitpost.

Thanks for the advice and ideas. I am comfortable doing up to class 3 and do have some moderate route finding / navigation skills. Thanks again for the ideas.
