Spent the weekend in the Lewis Fork Wilderness (Mt Rogers)
Posted: Wed Feb 10, 2010 1:17 amTook my 13 yo on his first "real" winter trip in the Lewis Fork WIlderness, below Mt Rogers summit Our little group planned to snowshoe/ski to Pine Mt but only got 2/3 way in all the snow. Made camp on the Lewis Fork/Lewis Fork Connector intersection in 2' snow.. There was close to 3' below the summit. Madison, my 13 has never snowshoed. Ben, who is 12 and a novice skier, managed to XC ski the whole way; each with a backpack to the campsite and thence to the summit.
Trip almost never happened; from torrential rains between home and Winston Salem, ice and wrecked cars from there to I-77 and sleet/snow that took me over an hour to drive the 40 miles from Fancy Gap to Wytheville. The worst drive I ever made. But the trip made it all worthwhile!
