231-mph NH wind gust is no longer world's fastest (recorded)

".......The concession came three days after the World Meteorological Organization posted a snippet on its Web site saying a panel of experts reviewing extreme weather and climate data turned up a 253 mph gust on Australia's Barrow Island during Cyclone Olivia in 1996.

That tops the 231 mph record set atop Mount Washington on April 12, 1934. ......
"

We knew this, and we are talking "recorded".

".......Mary Stampone, assistant professor of geography at the University of New Hampshire and the New Hampshire State Climatologist, said she had long expected the record to fall.

"As we improve our technology in terms of instrumentation, and we're observing in more locations, we were bound to pick up on something," she said.
"

But what we really need is a few three cup anemometers in the Washington DC area Wednesday night (tonight for some) - all records will be broken then - shattered.

Yeah I was just going to post this here. I just saw that on Yahoo, as I was going to check my email. You can't "record" the world's weather though. So Mt. Washington can still claim that as long as it wants.

Live Free or Die

Edit: Here's what the Observatory had to say:

I call bullshit. The Mt. Washington anemometer broke when it hit 231 that night. I'm pretty sure we hit about 256.

Australia can go throw another shrimp on the barbie and wait for another hurricane to get high wind speed. Here in the northeast, our brutal winds are au natural!

The sour grapes are nothing new. "Tornadoes don't count. Dopper radar doesn't count. Wire anemometers don't count. Anemometers on masts a hundred feet off the ground don't count [but a short mast on a building on a mountaintop does??]"
Check the editing history of the Wikipedia page. Nothing for a few days after the announcement, but the first edit to "previous record " was immediately replaced by "Northern Hemisphere record".

And don't get me started on "the World's Worst Weather"...

It's just wind :!:

Oh, and the Mt Washington anemometer did not break, and I'm pretty sure that all winds outside of a wind turbine are naturally occurring, no?

Ignore the troll :D
