But what we really need is a few three cup anemometers in the Washington DC area Wednesday night (tonight for some) - all records will be broken then - shattered.

Yeah I was just going to post this here. I just saw that on Yahoo, as I was going to check my email. You can't "record" the world's weather though. So Mt. Washington can still claim that as long as it wants.

This made the front page of my local Newspaper, kind of sad. It was always be the fasted wind speeds in my mind!

I call bullshit. The Mt. Washington anemometer broke when it hit 231 that night. I'm pretty sure we hit about 256.

Australia can go throw another shrimp on the barbie and wait for another hurricane to get high wind speed. Here in the northeast, our brutal winds are au natural!

The sour grapes are nothing new. "Tornadoes don't count. Dopper radar doesn't count. Wire anemometers don't count. Anemometers on masts a hundred feet off the ground don't count [but a short mast on a building on a mountaintop does??]"
Check the editing history of the Wikipedia page. Nothing for a few days after the announcement, but the first edit to "previous record " was immediately replaced by "Northern Hemisphere record".

And don't get me started on "the World's Worst Weather"...
