has anyone been to sand rock in alabama recently? i read (http://www.blueridgeoutdoors.com/current-issue/features/saving-sand-rock/) that there is development planned for the park it's in, and that fees will be implemented, but idk when. can you still climb there right now, and if so, what does it cost to get in? i'm tempted to plan a trip while i'm visiting the area but i wanted some personal recommendations before i try it.

I remember this pic of Sand Rock from the book The Rock Warriors Way.

It's a nice place but not worth driving south for. You'll spend hours driving past good rock to be disappointed. But, if you live on the Gulf, it's a worthy destination.

I climbed there yesterday. They already started clearing space for the new development around the current "parking lot." Not much has changed as of yet, and it's still free.

If you're going to be in the area Sand Rock is a great place to climb. Has pretty decent routes (for this far South!) and something for everybody. It's still no backcountry experience, but I don't think it's as dirty as it used to be.

There's nothing on SP (that I'm aware of) but mountainproject.com has a decent list of routes so you can find a few climbs without a guidebook.
