Road-side camping near Lake George? Or towards Lake Placid?

I'm headed up to the Adirondacks with the family this weekend, and we'll be hitting Lake George Village on the way up. She's down with camping, but I'm having trouble finding free camping near Lake George. Are there areas near the town (20 minutes or so driving) where wilderness camping is allowed? Ideally we'd park the car and hike for a few hundred yards and set up, since it's just a place to crash.

I saw there is island camping, but I think that would take too much time, and we'd have to rent a canoe which looks to be $60/day, which is ridiculous.

After Lake George we're headed to Keene Valley and then Lake Placid. I know there are tons of campsites along 9 between 87 and Lake Placid, and that you can camp anywhere more than 150 ft from trail, road, or water in the Park. So, we could head north and camp there. But, it would be Sunday night, with Labor Day being Monday, and I'm afraid of parking and campsites being packed. Any suggestions for places less-traveled that offer decent camping?

We are camping near Roaring Brook Falls on Monday night, but the crowds should be clearing by then.

Rogers rock is cool but not free. I would need acces to my maps right now (which i do not have) to suggest free areas. Try to pick up a local area trail map & find a flat area and follow the rules.
