Linville Gorge - Devils Hole

I may be heading back to Linville Gorge in early November and am looking for info on crossing the Linville River at Devils Hole. I'll be heading down from the west, crossing the river, and using the Devils Hole Trail to get to Jonas Ridge Trail.

Can you rock hop the river at this crossing? If not how deep can I expect the water to be (typical worst case-I understand it will vary)?
Once across the river, is it difficult locating Devils Hole Trail?
Is the summit of Gingercake Mountain "open" or tree covered?
Also, in early November what could I expect in terms of fall colors?

When I was there this summer and on the Linville Gorge Trail I located the "trail signs" for Devils Hole. Hopefully the info is still on the trees!

Thanks
