Didn't think we'd get another winter like last year for awhile but snow is way ahead of yearly average. For instance, Beach Mt has almost had a winters worth of snow. (http://averyweather.com/Almanac/Beech+Mountain+Snow). Can't get up to the hills for another 2 weeks. :(

Same here. I do have some hiking time coming up, but not for another couple of weeks. Nothing I'd like more than to hit the peaks while they're so packed with snow!

I attempted Mount Mitchell from the Black Mountain campground yesterday... turned around at Commissary Ridge. 12 to 18 inches there with higher drifts. It's been a good start to the snow season. This week should definitely add more with the big storm tomorrow followed by NW snow activity much of the rest of the week.

Starman, Where you park? Beech is up to 87" season total today. I heard Carvers Gap has 30+". As it will be cold through the week I suspect it will be snowshoe deep in 12 days.

I parked at the campground (around 3000 ft elevation)... about 4" on the ground there Saturday morning. I'm sure much more even there since the storm last night and today. Here in lowly Concord, NC we had around 4" today... with the Christmas snow that makes around 7" total for the season here, most here so far since 2004 I think!

Returned tonight from Mt Rogers. Snowshoed up the Mt Rogers trail yesterday. Took us 5 hours to cover 4.5 miles. The last 2 miles below Deep Gap uphill, unbroken and deep snow. Set up camp in the dark. Temp the am low 20's. This am went over to Thomas Knob, no sign of anyone except some XC skiers at Briar Ridge. Made our way out to the Ed's car for trip down to my car. There's alot of snow on the mountain. Some nice snow camping. :D
