I live in CougarTown. Well, let me rephrase that. I live in a small town in mountain lion territory and spend most of my time in their domain. Last winter, we had cougar tracks in our yard.
We talk about getting attacked when we go out, but we also talk about zombie invasions. I feel that they are about as likely. Their scream is terrifying, and we've seen them just a few times, but three things make me not too terrified of a cougar attack:
1. It is not a pack animal. I prefer territorial cougars to pack wolves.
2. It is an ambush attacker. It's a cat, not a bear. They can get scared off, and I don't think they'll persistently attack people if they lose their element of surprise/chase.
3. They attack from behind. I wear a pack. This may be illogical, but I feel like if I get attacked, it'll get a mouthful of nylon, and be thoroughly disappointed. I will then wet myself.
Bears and wolves in other regions seem like a much more serious threat.
