I'm curious, what boot do you guys wear for mountaineering, especially scrambling and less technical alpine stuff?

The guide tennies are really popular and any Vibram soled boot or low top, it really depends on preference and your feet...

I was considering the Trangos. I saw on the REI website that some people had trouble with their grip, especially on wet rock. Have you had any issues with that?

Montrail approach boots...forget the name. They climb up to 5.4 (for me), and you can use strap crampons with them.
Trangos if you are going to be on snow more than 30% of the time, approach shoes if less snow.

Would the Trangos be overkill for hiking, backpacking, and occassional scrambling? I could go with a backpacking boot, or maybe even something lighter. I just don't know. I also find myself in snow fairly often.

Trangos are good all around but they are a bit heavy. Kinda like the SUV of boots. You might check out that Makalu in this class too. As you can see above most of us use approach shoes with sticky rubber for scrambling.

The heavy boots are nice if you are crossing snow or loose talus. Loose talus is a blast but it chews up boots and that can get expensive.

Are approach shoes at all appropriate for rain and light snow?
