Hunersdorff high altitude water bottles?

I just aquired one of these water bottles because im a gear junky and wanted to try them out and see how different they are. I have yet to use them on a trip, but was wondering if anyone knows what the holes in the cap are for, they seem too small to use to tie on the cap, but maybe not. Also, on that note, how do you keep from losing your caps? Or is that why they sell exta ones?
