I have a two 4 x 8 peg boards for hanging packs, ice tools, crampons, rack, biners, etc. I also have half a dozen large plastic bins with lids that I store ropes, unstuffed sleeping bags, tents, stove and fuel and other items. Additionally, I have a metal 'baker's rack' that I store all of my boots and foot wear on.

Dedicate an entire room.... I had to!

+1 to dedicating a room to it, my roommate and I have a gear only room.

However, if sequestered to the garage, my recommendation would be large Tupperware containers with the gear organized by purpose. Rack in one, ropes in another, etc.

I'm a big geek about being organized - otherwise I always forget stuff. Now I look at my pegboard and scan it, asking myself "will I need anythig still hanging up?"

This setup has been slowly refined and works very well. No one storage system works for everything, you need a few:

Pegboard (pro, ice gear, biners, packs), shelves (footwear, helmets, camp kitchen, sleeping bags), hooks (jackets/pants) and plastic bins (socks, base layers, gloves, hats, miscellany).

In an effort to appease SWMBO, I keep all my gear in several big Rubbermaid storage tubs, rather than hanging up on display.

(This has the added advantage of not broadcasting to her just how much gear I've accumulated over the last several years... )

I just went with the boxes on shelving approach: snow/ice climbing, rock climbing, hiking stuff (no clothes just gear), camping stuff, long sharp stuff in one area, shoes on a shelf, clothes and backpacks hanging up along a dowel, etc. One way to organize I suppose. I guess if you have a big rack the pegboard might be a good idea.

i find that paper boxes are the perfect thing for storage. They are cheap, do not suffer from tapered bottoms and are the perfect size(they fit under my bed). I keep all my gear in a plastic drawer thing, under my bed in paper boxes, and hanging in my closet with sleeping bags in cotton stuff sacks on the top shelf.

Where did you get those metal slide out drawers? I like them.

it's tie racks from ikea for the hangers & some baskets/drawers for other junk. all this sh.tuff used to be scattered in a pile on the floor. then 3 years ago we decided to try & clean it up. overall i'd say it works well.
