In my most recent canyoneering experience, I discovered why a canyoneering pack is important. I have been using my Osprey Aether, which is good, but I don't want to destroy it. What do people have for recommendations as far as canyoneering packs go? I know it needs to be rugged and drain well....

I have heard that the Metolius pack is the best from a few places. Anybody ever used these packs or used ones that are similar?

I don't do any canyoneering, at least not on purpose, so I have no personal experience but I have heard good things Imlay Canyoneering packs: http://www.imlaycanyongear.com/packs.php

If you're really into it and can spare the cash, the French made Resurgence Pack is the top of the line. http://www.canyonsandcrags.com/servlet/ ... cks/Detail. I have had a Resurgence pack for quite some time and it fits the bill for a rugged pack specifically constructed for canyoneering. Whatever you decide on, I think the important features in a good canyoneering pack are durability, construction to allow drainage, a minimum of exterior straps and pockets that can snag on things. and comfort (critical if you do canyons with long approaches).

FWIW, I have this haul pack from Metolious: http://www.metoliusclimbing.com/shield.html which seems to be a lot like their Canyoneering pack minus the drain holes and roll top closure. I use my haul pack for cragging, Grade V in a day walls/aid climbs and bike commuting. It is the toughest pack I have seen and barely shows a scratch after being hauled up numerous pitches.

thanks for all the feedback. I wasn't looking at the imlay canyoneering stuff. A little pricy. The Resurgence looks like, but wayyy out of my price range for a canyoneering pack. That metolious bag looks like a deal though. I wonder if anyone has that haul bag and uses it for canyoneering? I heard about a guy that got a cheaper haul bag and just put gromlets in the bottom for a drain.
