I use a micro leatherman tool. Scissors, blade, and pliers, all in one very small and light package

For 1.9 ounces, the micro-leatherman is pretty tempting. When I go through cactus country in the winter, I often want positive-lock pliers.

Since it is 1.9 ounces instead of 2 ounces, maybe I'll consider carrying one.

Look after the ounces, and the pounds will take care of themselves.

Actually, I was thinking about in comparison to the average leatherman, which is more like 8 ounces. In the desert, I'd rather have 6oz more water.

I figure that as long as I use a little common sense, the pounds will take care of themselves.

Common sense is not too common. I'm always amazed how heavy peoples' daypacks are. They may bring 2-lb cans of peanuts, full rolls of duct tape, heavy tripods... but they often forget 1st aid kits, knives, compasses, or even raincoats.

If you can find two items, both of which will be adequate to your needs and cost about the same, pick the lighter item.

Thanks! Good ideas...
