Petzl Lynx on La Sportiva and Raichle: heel studs too wide?

Hi all,

First of all, please forgive me if this issue has already been discussed elsewhere, but I wasn't able to find it in another thread.

I recently bought two pairs of Petzl Lynx for me and my wife.
They receive a lot of good reviews online and even on this forum, it was mentioned that they fit well on LS boots.

Our problem is with the heel studs, the space between them is simply too wide.
The back of our soles can move backwards (when the straps are open), which is not good in my view.
This is a problem we often have encountered with rental-crampons, actually the primary reason for buying our own.

I have no prior experience with quick-lock heel straps, but I imagine that the boots should fit the crampons (make them stick) like any other crampon right?
Or will the heel-lock keep our shoes in place? Even in tough terrain?

On another note, I don't understand why those heel studs need to be that far apart anyway. Is there a reason to do this? Or why not make a third one in the middle as well, so your shoes don't slide backwards?

I am wondering whether anyone else is having these problems with the Lynx?

We are seriously considering welding an additional heel stud to the crampons, has anyone done this? Are there any reasons we really shouldn't do this ?

Thanks!

FYI:
My wife has Raichle's (don't know the type) (EU 38).
I have LS Batura 2.0's (EU size 45) and LS Nepal Trek EVO's (EU 45,5).

Post pictures.

You may need to slide the boot further back. That will usually get them to fit.

I had a problem with LS boots and Black Diamond crampons where they also seemed too wide. We ended up moving the attachment for the heel lock. Where the metal ''wire'' (not really the right word but i can't think of a better one) it connects to the crampon base, there were two possible holes to put it in. It had been in the ''larger'' hole, meaning the lock would clamp on further away from the back of the boot. We moved that to the hole closer towards the toe and then it made a much better connection. So check and see if there are more than one hole and maybe a combination of adjusting that hole and the size of the crampon would work. It did for me and my little 39s, so anyway, worth looking!

Sportiva, like a lot of arrogant, elitist manufacturers, has decided that they do not want to be compatible with the rest of the industry, but, I guess, thinks the industry should become compatible with them... As such, Sportiva's toe and heal welts are super narrow, and don't work well with Black Diamond or Petzl crampons. My Petzls at least have a 3rd rear "stud" in the back, which helps, but I still haven't figured out what to do about my Cyborgs.

Sportiva maintains that basically all step-in pons will fit all of their boots.

If you find a solution, please let us know

I have actually been considering moving to Grivel pons.. they've put out some dumb shit over the years, but the stuff they do well, they do really well.

I think their anti-balling plates are probably the best out there, also.

Rambo's ABP is total crap. G12/14 series are good. The best ABP I've seen are BD's. I think Petzl is catching up to Grivel pretty quickly now.

Nothing like CHINESE Quality made stuff eh?

"CRAP"? Now that is funny.

Hmmmmmmm.... "seen" is even funnier.

But whatever.

Unless Petzl has changed their ABPs since I bought my Vasaks, I'm gonna have to strongly disagree with that... I don't know if it's from getting crazy chewed up crossing maybe 200' of scree (my BDs have stomped through thousands of feet of scree and aren't hardly chewed up at all), or if the design just stinks, but they ball up just as bad as un-plated pons, in hot snow.

Case in point - the BD has about 4 times as many miles on it. It's a strictly winter pon, obviously, but it's still lazily traversed a hell of a lot more scree than the Vasak.

I am still baffled at the "Crap" comment regarding the Rambo ABP.

The ABP on the Bo's is the exact same set up that has been the 12's and 14's for the last five or six seasons.

So, if they are good on the 12/14's, why are they crap on the Bo's?

BTW: Got all three and have had no issues. And they have been tested quite vigorously may I add. Both by clients and myself.

Brand shoot outs aside, it is difficult to know what is going on here without a picture, but one issue: OP, having not used crampons with a heel throw before, you know that the length adjustment on the heel throw is important? If you don't get this right it can force the boot forward.

I would consider bending studs that didn't fit quite right. It's not unusual to have to bend something. OP suggests adding a third heel stud - sounds marginal. If it involved welding, likely to weaken the metal in the heat affected zone of the weld.

Grivel remedies that situ with their G-Series heel plate design (that has been around for well over seven years now) which prevents that from occurring. The studs are placed closer to center with an additional flange that faces inwards...

Long past several filings. Just replace em with a new front mod G20 mono unit..... $55.00 a pair Pro Deal from Grivel.

berolios, I use Asolo Annapurna's and LS Batura's on both my Rambo's and 20's. Solid and absolutely no slippage.

Are they still making a GSB pon?

Perfect example of the "dumb shit" I spoke of above.
