So, what you really want is a Fujifilm XS1 with its 26X zoom and its 2/3 sensor putting it at the best of the super zoom cams. The camera is larger than the RX100 though. If you are like most of us, we shoot mostly iso 100 in bright day light and therefore most of us don't even need the higher iso range. Now trying hand held sunrise/sunset shots simply won't work, but neither will they on the RX100, Panasonic GH3, or any NEX camera either so...

The RX100 has slightly better color and 1 stop of dynamic range, though that would show up only in RAW. Neither of which is to write home about over and beyond the 2/3 sensor. Now jumping to an APS-C sensor would be a jump in performance and $$$ and weight.

Personally, I don't mind not having a monster zoom range, though I do have 5x 24- 120mm zoom... Push come to shove, I would go with a 24-72mm lens and then a long telephoto of say 400mm myself and then leave the telephoto at home 95% of the time.

+1 it is a lot of weight for the amount of times I actually use it

I will take a diffuser I made for my headlamp for those long exposure night shots to light up the foreground long before taking a telephoto zoom(self made/modified tripod as well).

I would stick with a lighter-weight point and shoot with the built-in 10x optical lens ...

You never want to get carried away with optical lens ..
