Triple boots : choosing a size

Hi - I need a pair of triple boots (like the Millet Everest), but I can't try any on before I buy them - I can only buy them online.

On Denali, I'll be wearing THICK socks (maybe even over another pair of liners) and the altitude will make my feet swell.

If I usually wear size 11 shoes, do I get size 11 boots (does the manufacturer account for socks & other factors) ??

Or, If I have to go up, by how much ?

Thanks

Not sure on the sizing, but do you already own a good set of double boots? If so, a supergaiter might be a better/cheaper solution.

I don't - but buying triple boots will be just a little more expensive than double boots + gaiters and overboots (Last year's Millet Everest sells for about 599 online)

How did you choose the size of your double boots ? are they the same size you normally wear or bigger ?

Thanks

I think the answer is: it depends.

Different boots fit differently, and that includes how close they come to "street size." It also depends on how thick your 'thick socks' are. But generally, a 45 is supposed to fit like a 45. Note "supposed to" and "generally."

What some folks do when buying online is to buy 2 or 3 pair at the same time, knowing you are going to return some. Or all!- you may find that one brand or model of boot fits your feet great while another brand does not. When I was buying boots for Denali (online, like you), I couldn't fit the model I wanted most. But I eventually found some boots that worked great.

So check the return policy, whip out that credit card, and go for it.

I have bought a couple pair of Oly Mons. I am normally a 45 but buy 46 for the big boots so I can wear really thick socks.

I think it's important to consider several things. Are you just trying for Denali, and your boots will sit in the closet or get sold on Ebay 2 weeks after your return like so many before you?...or would versatility in gear benefit you because you already do and will continue to climb a variety of peaks?

If it's the latter, you'd probably be better off with a good double boot with a supergaiter - you can strip the supergaiter when you don't need as much warmth on a lesser hill. My old climbing buddy wears Spantiks, and uses the Mountain Tools supergaiter with those. That's just an example, there are many cheaper good boots that will keep you plenty warm.

As far as sizing goes, it depends on the brand a little, especially with the width. My understanding is that Scarpa/Lowa boots tend to treat a wider foot more kindly. Not sure about Millet. Folks with normal-width feet do well with Sportiva.
