Aussie thinking of buying gear in Mexico

I have been travelling for 13 months now and in that time have become slightly obsessed with mountaineering. To expand on the basic skills, I want to begin rock climbing when I get back home. I'm currently in Mexico, and just wondering if its worth buying some basic gear here to get me started as opposed to back home. I'm guessing that like everything else, climbing gear would be twice as expensive in Aus as the States, and Mexico been a neighbour, is it worth investing here?

Secondly, any recommendations? At this point even for shoes, harness and maybe some basic carabiners and protection gear?

Cheers

Sometimes the price differential isn't as much you would think between US and American prices. I know nothing about what is available in Mexico.

Looking at climbinganchors.com.au and REI for example and including a credit card surcharge of 3% and exchange rate of 0.91for the REI stuff, I priced some beginner mountaineering gear.

( I have no affiliation with Climbing Anchors. Im a member of REI. I chose REI as they have a store in LA that is reasonably close to LAX and you could pick up possibly on your way home. )

Petzl Meteor III+ Helmet
CA - 134.96
REI - $113

Black Diamond Momentum Harness
CA - $78.95
REI - $62

Black Diamond Raven
CA - $98.95
REI - $90

Black Diamond Sabretooth
CA - $197.96
REI - $203

BD Express Ice screw
CA - $62.95
REI - $67

Thanks for that info Radson.

Definitely surprised about the little price difference, hopefully I will have enough time to check out the REI store in LA.

Many thanks
