Altitude and acclimatization

Hi,
I'm planning my trip to Argentina in January / February 2011. I'd like to spend some time in the north west, but I will visit the Mendoza area as well, to do some hiking in the Cordon del Plata (hikes up to around 4500 m / 14.700 ft or maybe higher).
Because of my short stay (two or three days) in Cordon del Plata, full acclimatization will not be possible if I start my trip in the Mendoza area. Another option is to start in Salta area, where I have more time to adjust to the altitude (around 2800 m / 9.200 ft) and then travel to Cordon del Plata. Or is it of no use, since I have to do a 3 day drive - in lower areas - from Salta to Mendoza?
Many thanks!
