looking for anyone interested in wandering the west rosebud drainage for a couple weeks ? non-tech peak ascents, picture taking, fishing ( ? ), and lallygagging about. wanna go up wood, hague, twin peaks, storm, little park, hodges, mystic, granite, and a couple un highpoints.

A bunch of my friends are hoping to do the Beaten Path July 21-24, but I'm not sure if enough snow will be melted by then.

Can't commit to a couple weeks, but I'd definitely join you for a couple day climbs or an overnight. I'm in Red Lodge, and am likely up for a climb with relatively short notice. Get in touch when your plans firm up if you need a partner.

so long as it melts out in the next 30+ days i plan to head up there. my plan tho is head in and not come out for the 2 weeks. day 1 camp near island lake and day 2 wander up wood.

Given the high water, you might not be able to cross the West Rosebud above Mystic Lake. So if you want to get to Island Lake and Mt Wood, you might have to bushwhack up the West side. Also, there's a lot of snow in the high country.

Just cross at the dam at the front of the lake -- the gate is usually open. But more importantly, the Mystic Lake Road has sustainted significant damage this season and may be closed beyond July. It is currently impassable.

It is usually open, but not always - kind of a bummer after climbing the switchbacks.

Although the lower part of the West Rosebud Road is closed, you can get to Emerald Lake CG (which is only about a mile and a half from the trailhead) via Fiddler Creek Road (out of Dean). It'd be worth checking with the Forest Service to get the latest info, though.

just talked to the forest service. Lower part of the road is still closed, and the road is closed above emerald lake (a mile or so from the trailhead).

*ugh*

last year i planned too early, july 4-18, and snow was still deep and low. now this year late july/early august may see lingering deep snow and washed out roads ? why isn't global warming melting the snow ?!? i'm gonna start letting my car idle all day.

jesus hates me. been looking forward to playing in the beartooths for 3 years now. guess that'll roll over to 4...
