High Grizzly Activity?

Last month, I was remarking that with the abnormally heavy snowpack this summer, bears might be staying lower longer, with more bear-human encounters than usual.

Last week in Glacier National Park, I encountered four different grizzlies along the same trail on the same day. There was actually a fifth, one of two cubs, but it was hidden by brush when the mother and the other cub went right by the trail.

The Grinnell Glacier Trail was temporarily closed because of grizzly activity.

A black bear and cub strolled through the Swiftcurrent campground and cabins area one morning.

Hiking back from Iceberg Lake, I was notified by other hikers of two different grizzlies in two different places by the trail. I never saw them, but I don't doubt they were there.

There were other reports of bear activity, especially in Many Glacier Valley.

And we all know about the fatality in Yellowstone earlier this summer.

Anyway, take extra care out there, especially if you're not from the region and therefore aren't as informed about the conditions this year.
