Page width question?

Did a TH page recently and find that it looks fine on my Mac, but it seems to be too wide on my PC at work. It has 2 medium sized photos next to each other in a couple spots. On the PC, I see the entire left photo but only the edge of the right photo. Also, for some reason, there's no side to side bar at the bottom to bring the right side of the page into view.
Here's the link: http://www.summitpost.org/trailhead/432 ... lhead.html
Anybody know what I'm doing wrong??

Yep. I bet you're using Internet Explorer (on your work machine). That's usually a mistake.

But keep in mind that people use monitors of all different sizes (width especially), and two SP-medium-size photos side by side add up to 1000 pixels wide. It's polite to keep the total width down to about 800px (not counting the sidebar that SP adds).

Folks with small screens (or just using a small browser window) and using a standards-compliant browser will see one photo below the other, leaving big white spaces to right or left where the other photo didn't quite fit.

Thanks for the input! I'll tweak it down and see how it looks.

Hello,

I'd like to revise this topic because, since I obtained a 22-inch monitor, I seem to be creating pages that don't display well for folks with smaller monitors.

1) Are there any ways that I can "force" the content of my pages to display well on a more flexible range of monitor sizes?

2) What other tips/tricks/hints do folks employe to avoid building page that display poorly on smaller monitors?

Thanks!

Sarah

Hi Sarah

I use both 17 and 22 inch monitors and haven't had a problem displaying your pages on either.

I don't know what the stat is for 2009, but in 2008 around 48% of people used a screen resolution of 1024x768 (generally what 17 inches will give you), so really all pages should be made to view neatly at that res, but should also be presentable at a higher res. In SP terms, this means that anything you post to a page (photos, tables etc) should be no more than 800px wide.

A good tool for checking whether or not your page looks presentable is to use www.screen-resolution.com. All you have to do is paste your page's URL into the text box, and then select what resolution you want to view it at. Simple!

As for tips, it's not ideal but I often use html tables to help align objects on my pages. You can set a table's width attribute as a percentage, so the table will expand and contract with whatever the resolution of the viewer is. I've found this is particularly useful for displaying horizontally aligned photographs.

Or you could place all your text, photos etc in tables, and then use a tables to define the maximum width you want your page to be, which as said before, should be no more than 800px. I have tried this once here here, but I'm not entirely sure I'm happy with the result and haven't done it again.

Hope that helps,
Cheers

Dan

Dan,

Thank you so much for your very informative reponse, especially this trick:

I will save that link to my HTML practice page.

Thanks again for sharing your expertise!
