I am updating a page and would like to use an image from another site, but by linking directly to it.
can I do this? do I need special permission from the other site?
not sure how all this works.

You can hotlink to other sites and technically do not need any permission. You aren't actually copying the image when you do this, and if they remove the source then it removes it from your page as well.

This code works to display it. You can also add arguements to it to resize the image, or put the back box around it to make it appear like a standard image as if it were hosted on SP. Josh could probably provide cleaner code for that than I can.

Code: Select all
<img src="PHOTO URL HERE">

To change height or width (better to pick just one)
Code: Select all
<img src="PHOTO URL HERE" height="42" width="42">

It may be legal, but I've seen it cause problems in the past when the owners of sites got upset.

In a forum post, I would probably be OK to just post the photo and link if possible, but on a mountain page, it may be best just to provide a link.

Scott: there is a CC by-sa license on the image.I believe I can actually use the image itself on the page (no link) so long as I credit the image owner.
Interesting!

You can't copy the image... only link to it.

But it can be displayed without copying it as it would be using the code above.

Attribution
CC BY
This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation. This is the most accommodating of licenses offered. Recommended for maximum dissemination and use of licensed materials.

Attribution-ShareAlike
CC BY-SA
This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial purposes, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. This license is often compared to “copyleft” free and open source software licenses. All new works based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also allow commercial use. This is the license used by Wikipedia, and is recommended for materials that would benefit from incorporating content from Wikipedia and similarly licensed projects.

- am I understanding this: if the picture I want to use has the above license, I can in fact upload and place it on the page as long as I credit the owner ?

Yes. They own the rights to their image. But they are in effect loaning them to you, so long as you give them credit.

also, as long as they are letting you use the image, you should save it and upload it to a file sharing site yourself, and then link to that (still giving them credit, of course). that way, if they take it down or reorganize their site at some point, you won't wind up with a broken link on your page.

Well yeah... but that file sharing site could be just uploading it to SP directly.

If you photoshop an animal into it, make up a catchy caption, and then tell lies about how you were so patient and so lucky to get the shot, you'll not only have a lock but will get dozens of fawning comments as well. It doesn't even matter if it's obvious what you've done!
