That's basically correct, but once in awhile exceptions are made. We just don't want to see postings made, memberships created, or materials submitted where the goal is to advertise a product or service.

It's pretty obvious that the stuff we deleted on this thread was created for commercial purposes.

From the "Terms of Service":

"Post any Content that promotes pyramid schemes, chain letters or disruptive commercial messages or advertisements, or anything else prohibited by law or these Terms of Service. Commercial advertisements are not welcome on SummitPost and are usually deleted quickly. This includes guiding services and other climbing-related enterprises. Recommendation and/or listing of available services or products does not necessarily constitute commercial advertisement. If you stand to make money from someone acting on your post, it is probably going to be deleted. Some leeway is given to members making significant contributions to SP."

This morning I received an email directly from "kong" who, I believe, is the member in question here, soliciting interest in the expedition cited above.

Alarmingly, the address he/she sent it to is a private address and not the one I used when I registered for SP and which is in my profile. I have never used or entered this address during any of my dealings with SP, it's members or the elves.

Any suggestions as to how this could come about? And before anyone asks, I have no forwarding instructions set up in any of my email accounts.

I have no idea how that could occur. Bob, Aaron, Gangolf?

In case it helps, the return path from the rogue mail's properties is "apache@summitpost.org". Naturally I haven't opened it and have quarantined it.

I still don't know how it could happen. In the meantime, I froze Kong's membership. Hopefully the other Elves will have an answer.

I'm clueless here. This is a new one on me. Perhaps Gangolf or Bob will have a better idea.

No idea - if you never used your address in your dealings with SP, SP can't know it. If the address is apache@summitpost.org - it really actuallly doesn't mean very much because you can fake them easily.

Some months ago I changed the email address in my profile, exactly to see if SP is related to any spam I get on the previous account. In 5 months I didn't receive one single spam.

Another commercial outfitter unable to distinguish between contributing photos and obnoxious self-promotion:

user_id=36355

See, for example, the caption of the Alpamayo photo.

Was that sent recently or before I froze his membership?

All this guy's posts have looked like subtle advertising for a long time but this one is blatant!
