Wow, thanks for sharing, I never would have read that report otherwise. What a great post by Wolfgang.

weighing in. first of all, my go giants post a couple months ago was deleted, uncalled for, i guess, ok and then i read this tr and i was a little suprised. or- it seemed a little inconsistent. supporting athletic teams- no. call a religion a hoax and, what i think was way more eggregious, calling our chicks fat- thats ok? to paraphrase 'americans pulling around thier haggard wives on some kind of "diet"'- oh no you didnt!! ha! anyway as a h.r.c. im not offended but i can see how folks would be. and i wish i could say that everybody should just drink a beer and relax but this stuff is so touchy! for instance, i could easily see there be some kind of list or trend of summited religious points. wailing wall (5.11a) ayers rock (which has already been done but theres prolly a way to do it that would really piss a lot of people off), etc, etc

The penguin is probably very tired after the swim from the Antarctic (where there are no polar bears), to the Arctic (where there are no penguins).

Geez, Eric, glad you finally realized it's far better to smile than to frown.

Speaking of smiling, (which Wolfgang told me to do, by the way), sometimes you just gotta
roll with the punches.. LIKE these three FELLOWS did back in the DAY. Hey, hey, hey ...

RE: Consistency of what is considered offensive?

With this long conversation going on about talking disrespectfully about the Vatican, I feel like I should point out that I found the joke about the Muslim suicide bomber extremely offensive in a similar if not worse note. Yet no one has yet bothered to point out the double-standard that seemed glaringly clear to me.

(let me clarify - the comment itself wasn't offensive to me personally and I get the more subtle jest. But it does fall into the same sort of "not cool" category that so many people are putting this topic into)

Personally I just ignore such comments if I find them "not cool" if they don't hurt anyone since I partake in my own share of blasphemous and offensive humor, but I figured I'd point out the hypocrisy here if you all are going to get so riled up over how someone talks about the Vatican. :-(

PellucidWombat, I think we're missing the point. At least let me refer to the comment I posted...What I pointed out very clearly, is that slander or sarcasm about ethnic or religious groups - and, believe me, if there was a joke about a Muslim suicide bomber somewhere in some other report, I don't find that the slightest bit more "cool" than jokes about the Vatican on SummitPost - is something that just DOESN'T FIT INTO AN INTERNATIONAL SITE UPON A SHARED TOPIC OF LOVE FOR NATURE! This is my point! I didn't come across the "Muslim suicide bomber report" myself, but if I had, I'm sure I would have said the same thing as I did about the report in question here on this particular blog - it's something that could make some people feel offended, and most important of all, that is a statement which goes contrary to the idea of SummitPost as a whole - a common passion for something that stands above all questions of nationality, confession, ethnic groups etc. In our case - mountains! :P

The page is clearly off-topic.
But I fully agree with what was written by Wolfgang. To understand the damage and the futility of the Vatican state, I did not have to wait for the visit to the Vatican, but it was enough to be born and grow up in Italy.
Why should I have respect for a state that for 2000 years has never had respect for anyone?????
For me the page is not offensive, but clever and funny.

Yeah, but ... I'm giving Wolfgang the benefit of the doubt that he was able to confess all his sins within the three years since he had initially penned the page.

Man, that was a mouthful.
