knee question

My both knees lately feel like I've been hiking for a long time when actually I'm well rested. Aggravated by humid climates, but cannot swear that it's true. What is it?

I cringe to even suggest this (and you don't post your age on your profile, so you could be 16 or 70), but have you investigated arthritis as a cause of your discomfort?

50. The doctor said no arthritis looking at my MRI.

What causes it in a young and perfectly healthy TIRED knee? I'm guessing it's some sort of fluid build up?

Both my knees have hurt somewhat for 10 years. It actually gets worse when I don't get enough exercise, to the point were I have to go down stairs sideways. Dr says it's from beating on my knees for 40 years and that, as long as it doesn't keep me from doing what I want, there really isn't any reason to look for detailed causes or to try to fix it.

Ha! At fifty years of age there are things you'll just have to start dealing with. I'm 55 and was in a pretty bad motorcycle accident when I was 22 tweaking my left knee sideways just to the point of not needing surgery. Now I still tend to favor my good one but both knees tend to ache more the less active I am. I attribute this to age. If you don't use it you'll lose it. Glucosamine does help a lot with all my joints and I've started wearing a knee brace as a preventative measure on my bad knee which has helped with any pain after extreme use. (backpacking up and down, aid and free climbing) I would try some light hiking/walking on a regular basis and/or glucosamine. I use the glucosamine during the season I'm most active and in the winter I just try to stay mobile. I work at a bench most of the time so I usually have to make a concious effort. Listen to the bod and act accordingly.

At 38 I've trashed both my knees after years of hiking, construction, and many years in the airline biz up in Alaska. Running up and down the ramp at a float plane dock with 70lbs at a time will take its toll. Worst is my right knee. I'd taken a spill on a steep slope in high school and kind of tweaked it, but nothing major. A few years later when I was in college, I really screwed it up. Walking down a 30 degree slope in the dark and stepped into a 2' deep hole. My entire upper body momentum flipped me into a somersault down the hill, hyperextending my right knee to the point that it dented the end of my femur when the joint slammed back together. The tendons and ligaments healed up, but here's where it gets weird. Every so often, a small piece of cartilage will break off because of the dented portion, and float around in my knee joint. It feels as if my knee is going to blow out at any moment, feels unstable and weak. When I went to the doctor because of it years ago, he told me that strength wise, my knee joint was fine, but that bit of cartilage makes it feel unstable (and really f-ing painful at times). It has to wear itself down and be absorbed. Over time with more exercise and diet, it has improved. One thing to consider besides Glucosamine is that if you are having an issue with the synovial fluid in the joint, it is not lubricating the cartilage like it is supposed to. Making sure you are getting enough sulfur in your diet is important for joint health (MSM, onions, garlic), and Hyaluronic acid (a component of synovial fluid) can be supplemented as well.

Anyone know what it means if your knee just hurts, only when you descend a flight of stairs?

When I had something similar I was told it was an IT band issue.

I've had a recurring knee problem from an injury about 10 years ago. A month ago the tendons or ligaments whatever plus a peanut sized chunk thats been
floating around the kneecap got messed up and i couldn't staighten my left leg out for 2 weeks. I was hopping on one leg and crawling till I got crutches. One morning it finally straightened on its own. Knees are tricky. I'm gratefully getting around fine with a brace but easing back into hiking gradually.
It's a trip and humbling being handicapped!
Considering if I really need those potatoes on the other side of the store bad enough to hobble all the way over to get them!

Icing is key, Maybe glucosamine, knee support, MRIs are much more revealing than xrays.
If I could afford it I would be looking into MRI and or surgery. For now I just wear a good brace and constantly monitor the feeling of the mechanics as I go.
