Last days having those 12 staples along my wound. Any recommendations for the first days/weeks without them :?: Due to I also have internal stitches I won't be able to practice sports. How much time did it take to you to do sports :?:

So it's been 10 days since your surgery. You're probably feeling like an old man.

For me, that was about the low point, psychologically. But if you had an ordinary mesh repair, Diego, you're going to feel so much more like yourself in another week or two.

I began light hiking 14 days post-op. It started with a gentle hill walk, a 300-meter ascent, being careful, but it felt ok, and within a week after that (20 days after the operation) I could do sustained aerobic exercise with my pulse in the 130-150 range for an hour or more.

I guess I didn't feel confident enough to do full-out sports (like running a time trial) till 40 days post-op, and carrying a really heavy pack didn't start till almost 60 days post-op for me.

Yep chugach, it's been 10 days since surgery but I'm not feeling such bad. I try to think on my worst moments before having those low ranked thoughts, as the VERY bad couple of months that I had in late 2010 whem suffering from a cervical slipped disk. Then the pain was 8 to 9 in a scale of 10 so I had to take drugs as OxyContin (oxycodone). I'll be carefull the next 3 weeks by following my doctor's advices. I've already done a few walks, none of them long, 45' the more lasting. Yesterday I drove almost 300 Km with the staples still in my skin...

One month and a half since surgery I've could go to the mountains but I'm not totally fine. I've still had some pain in the area so we decided to go back after having ascended to a Sistema Central subsidiary summit called Reajo Capón (2093 m). However I enjoyed it as a child and I must think that is necessary some more time. My doctor said that I shouldn't do big effort til 6 months from surgery. May I be like a turtle then...

Any toughts :?:

Diego, you and I can have turtle races. Reajo Capón is an ascent of 300m from puerto de Navafria, no? Well, with my present foot injury, after several months, I can only climb and descend 200m, so you are still ahead of me. But look out ... by next month I hope to be at 400 meters, so you will have to extend yourself to stay ahead!

It's pathetic, but we do what we can. And in 2014, we will be back to normal.

383 m showed my GPS, there are some short descents in its ascent. Have a turtle like recovery chugach ;)

After repeating those near 400 m when I solo ascended San Pedro (1425 m) we have reached Peñalara (2429 m) top and both Dos Hermanas summits today. They've been 660 m of ascent :)

How is your foot chugach :?:

Having many doubts these days. After having passed holidays two weeks ago I've had suddens a few times per day. So I visited my doctor who said that I shouldn't do efforts for the next 2 months and week at least (6 months after surgery). Shouldn't ascend mountains and neither ride my mountain bike, only not long walks and some swimming is permited. On holidays we did a 600 m gain ascent and a 22 Km almost flat walk. We also did some other short walks visiting nice sea clifs. Anyway, I'd say that my abdominal sharp pains (weak) were because of the 3200 Km driven. My doctor said that if I'd had to be operated again it would risky and difficilt. So I don't feel fine without my mountains' ascents though the summer central Spain heat. If having pain after those 6 months they'd scan my abdomen first.

Any thoughts :?:

I'm sorry you're stuck inside and can't get to the mountains. I've been shut down by injury a few times and it's very depressing. Maybe you can spend the down time planning some big exciting trips for next year and figuring out a training plan. Best of luck to you. Maybe 2014 will be the year of your finest summits ;)

Diego, this is distressing and not normal. You really should not have to limit physical activity 6 months after hernia surgery. Something isn't right--have you thought about getting another doctor's opinion?

It's possible a nerve has been entrapped. There are things that can be done about this--in this country, you might consult with a doctor certified in pain management. I don't know how those specialties are organized in Spain.

And thanks for asking about my foot ... I am tolerating up to about 1000 meters in a day, but I don't do well with side-hilling because it squeezes the irritated nerves. That's pretty limiting. Things are 1000% better than 5 months ago when I couldn't walk across the street, but it's a slow, slow recovery.

chugach, those were your words (bold) in early June:

chugach mtn boy wrote:Hi Diego. I had the unpleasant surprise of discovering this problem last June.

The risk is that it will become strangulated, which is a medical emergency. This is a small risk and one worth taking for many people, since they can deal with the emergency if it arises. In my case (and maybe yours), I am quite often in a situation where I could NOT get help quickly in a medical emergency. And so I decided to have it fixed by surgery.

I had ordinary, open repair surgery with mesh. I felt wonderful the day after surgery and engaged in normal activities. This was a big mistake (too much too soon), and I paid for it in misery for about 10 days thereafter. But the recovery was rapid after that. 8 weeks after the operation, I was able to climb 2000 meters up a 4000m peak, and descend, all in a single day, with no pain or ill effects. I was also able to carry heavy packs at that point. So I would say 8 weeks to essentially full recovery.

The only aftereffect that lasted more than 8 weeks was numbness along the distribution of the ileoinguinal nerve (which mostly serves the inner upper thigh, not a very important area). In my case, this went back to normal after 4 or 5 months.

Buena suerte!

So I should wait and see. I shouldn't do efforts and think in a healthy future. I wont ask any other doctor. Mine is my cousin's wife so I'll patiently wait. If I still have pain in September 20th she'll order an ultrasonography. I passed surgery in March 20th.

Be careful with your feet
