Hey, Graham. This forums thread is killing me.

Any chance you'd want to build out a photo album to capture some of these images? I mean, some of these are classics. Too classic to be lost once the thread dies.

I'd be happy to contribute some "black concert t-shirts and jeans hiking" photos, etc., to expand the "noob" album.

Cheers,

Sarah

I would never wear jeans and a t-shirt while hiking in the mountains. I prefer cotton shorts and a sweatshirt, personally.

My friend. Helluva nice guy but he needs to invest in some heavy gear to replace that super-heavy crap :)

January 1985 on Mt. San Gorgonio in Southern California. It was my second time up there in winter as part of a high school trip. I was 16. I had these horrible crampons that kept falling off no matter what I did. They had a single strap over the toe area and another single strap that went from the back of the heel, over your instep, and back to the heel. If they were at all loose, they'd pop off instantly and rattle down whatever hill I was climbing. It was a pain for others to have to descend and fetch my crampon while I balanced on one leg, and it could be really scary for me. I made leashes out of cotton shoelaces so the crampons wouldn't slide when they fell off. At the time I was too naive to realize that I should change the straps. I thought there was only one design.

In spite of the crampon problems, I was having a great time! The photo was taken in the morning while we were putting on our gear. I was about to start rubbing the ice off the shoelace so I could tie it on.

People can blame it on being a "noob", but I did all of my hiking/climbing in blue jeans for the first 10 years in the outdoors. That included quite a lot of winter climbing in Colorado, in temps down to -20F.

My mom used to make my raingear.
See my avatar photo.
That is my coolest noob photo. But everything I've ever done I had to do a first time, some of my first times for doing things occurred this year!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's the whole point of this thread.
